Moments of Deliciousness & Indulgence
It was a cloudy, rainy day. I had decided the night before to take this day for me. I had cleared my schedule days before. Knowing that the next day would be mine, I stayed up late and watched a good movie. I would wake up not with an alarm but when my body was ready. Today was going to be all about me. My day began a little later than usual, I got up at 9:30am, it was indulgence. I had my usual cup of coffee and as I sat there enjoying the seagulls pass by, I asked myself, what do you want for yourself today? “Nothingness,” “Stillness” and “Quiet.” I want to just sit quietly this morning, of course once the caffeine kicked in, I was ready for more.
I looked at my surroundings and found a project. I had been wanting to organize my bookshelf. As I began organizing my bookshelf and got halfway through, I got caught up in a book I had been wanting to read, the hours passed. I never finishing the project at least not that day, but I truly enjoyed reading the book. As the evening came to an end, I realized I didn’t do much, but that which I did felt good, it was what I needed, it was what I had been wanting, it was what I was craving. A day of contentment and peaceful existence, my way.
How often do we give ourselves the time and quiet moments our mind, body and soul need to recover from the heaviness of our life. Constant noise, interruptions, stimuli, long to-do lists and responsibilities. Doing, doing, doing often leads to underdoing and overdoing. Society tells us that is the way. I found that by incorporating self-care and self-love it gives me the energy to keep doing, at least doing what matters and what is important. The word I CAN’T take the time…is not allowed here. How about instead the focus is on HOW CAN I? What do I need to do to make it happen? A baby-sitter, call in sick, call in sick even though your retired. Why not? You’re the boss of You!
When the mind is rested, we have more clarity and creativity. When the body is rested, we have more energy and when our soul feels at peace we tackle the day with more ease, more grace and are more strategic and present. Slowing down is a good thing.
Today I would practice the art of slowing down and going with the flow. I will disconnect from my routine of rush, rush and worries of piled dishes, business meetings, laundry waiting and housekeeping chores. I found the most comfortable loungewear (a pair of old sweats) and warm socks and grabbed a cup of tea and curled up in my comfy chair to read. I often refer to these as moments of “Deliciousness.” I define deliciousness as those moments you give yourself to be indulgent. A nice nap, sleeping in, or maybe not getting up at all and watching a series of great movies.
We tend to forget when faced with overwhelm, depression or simply rushing through our daily routines what makes us happy. What makes you happy? What calms your soul? What re-energizes you? Take a moment to write your own personalized deliciousness list and pull it out when you need it. All of this while not feeling guilty, because the truth is we don’t have to do anything unless we want to. Of course, that doesn’t mean you throw responsibilities out the window, one day of relaxation will regenerate you and reset you on the right course. Reset, Realign, Re-energize and then Go, Go, Go!
Time is the one thing we never get back. Remember to give yourself time, self-love and appreciation of life. Enjoy who you are, enjoy what you have and be grateful for what is! The pursuit of happiness is truly the here and now. Allow life to flow towards you.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Happy Friendship Day, Happy You Day!
